A Study on the Factors Inducing the Uncertainty in Illness and Their Effects on the State Anxiety


Abstract
The uncertainty in illness was statistically analyzed through a survey of 114 patients randomly selected at wards of general hospitals in Seoul. The factors which comprises the uncertainty were found as ambiguity, unpredictability, lack of information, incomplete diagnosis, vague explanation and unclear extent of responsibility beared by each member of the medical team, fluctuating course of symptom remissions and excerbations, and lack of communication. Depending on the education level, marital status, sex of the patients and also on the kind of illness the patients are suffering, the degree of uncertainty and the combination of above factors causing the uncertainty were different. The analysis also showed a significantly positive correlation between the degree of uncertainty and the state anxiety.
